Roggenplaat sand nourishment and the potential for artifical reefs

The Roggenplaat is a tidal flat just behind the storm surge barrier. Over the last 10 years, the sand deficit problem in the Eastern Scheldt resulted in a relative fast erosion of the Roggenplaat. To maintain the ecological values on the Roggenplaat, and reduce the wave impact on Schouwen, the government has recently decided to start with a sand nourishment on the Roggenplaat. In the 2016 the partners of the Centre of Expertise Delta Technology will work on an optimal design for this sand nourishment.

On severaal places in the Eastern Scheldt artificial reefs are built in the intertidal zone, to support sedimentation of the tidal flats, and dissipate wave energy. The focus of this research is evaluate the effectiveness of these measures at the field locations (Oesterdam, De Val, slikken van Vianen), based on existing field data from Rijkswaterstaat (Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment) and literature. Based on this investigation a design rules will be developed for artificial reefs on the Roggenplaat and the possible locations of these reefs on the Roggenplaat will be investigated.
